SILVER denar, Hungary, Matthias II, 1608 - 1619

Matthias hoped to bring about a compromise between Catholic and Protestant states within the Holy Roman Empire in order to strengthen it. He granted religious concessions to Protestants but was opposed by the more intransigent Catholic Habsburgs who forced him to revise his liberal policies.

SILVER denar, F, 0.492g, 14.3mm, 180o, Kremnitz mint, 1611; obverse MAT • II • D •G • REX • HVN • 1611 •, crowned two-part shield with Hungarian arms (Árpádian stripes and double cross in crown on thee hills), K–B (privy mark) in fields; reverse PATRONA 8 HVNGARI, Madonna seated facing, crowned, infant Jesus in her left arm, cross in right.

A powerful psychometric coin, obtained specifically with that in mind.

Having worked with this coin over the past few days, I like its connections with the Medieval & Early Renaissance. It has traveled quite a bit and been over much of the town of Budapest during its life as a coin in circulation, and carries well many of the images and scenarios, including some very intimate personal ones, which may have involved you, as the former owner of this coin, which was found near the Gellert Baths.

If you got a powerful "hit" when you first saw it, it just might have been part of your pocket change back in the day!
