This comes from the collection of the man who wrote the book on the area of the Levant!

Ex William Turner Collection. William Turner (1792 - 1867), British diplomat of the early 19th century, authored his interesting and opinionated Journal of a Tour in Levante (1820) describing his adventures in the area. This specimen was obtained by Turner in the course of his travels (1812 - 1817).

III:276-7 "We walked to a bath to look at the famous vase which has excited so much admiration, it is of fine marble and good preservation...[originally it was] full of large pieces of money; on being questioned they said one of these coins was yet in possession of a Turk in the neighbourhood, but on my asking if I could see him and it, of course he was now at a distance..."
