Jewelry has been worn from the earliest time of human existence. Recently archaeologists found shells beads in Israel which they date back to 100000 bc. That is a long time in human history. It appears we humans have worn bones and shells, wood carvings, precious stone and, most of all, beads to adorn ourselves. A lot of the gems were attributed magical qualities.

Where did our ancient beads come from?

Ancient jewelry cannot do without ancient beads. Most of our ancient beads were either traded and purchased at auctions or obtained through good friends in the late 1970ties and 1980ties. It is amazing to hold in your hands something that 2000 or 3000 years ago someone hand-made and used. One question always is: how do you know a bead is ancient? There is a story here on that topic on the video link below.

How do you know a bead is ancient?

But where do our ancient beads come from?

All of our ancient beads came from the Mediterranean area, Europe and Asia Minor, dating from VI c. B.C. to XI c. A.D. Because they may have traveled far from their place of origin, it is difficult to asses the exact date and provenience even of those found in situ in a scientific excavation with clearly defined stratigraphy. The beads have been researched and attributed in accordance with archaeological reports and studies based on analogies of material, size, shape, techniques of workmanship and iconography.
